How to make your rewrites stronger

Rewrites? Have you ever heard about it? Maybe You are rewriting Guru? We selected the most important tips that leads to make perfect rewrites.

The most important and the hardest part of writing is to start. First you should make a draft so you shouldn‘t think too much, just write and think about what you want to say, not about if it‘s correct – you will think about it later. Completed text is just a first step to the real and strong rewrite which shapes your text and brings all the details together. I will give you 7 tips for better rewrites which will make it perfect.

First step

Reread your text and find some unnecessary words and phrases which can be cutted or replaced. It‘s normal that in your first draft there will be a few or even many inaccuracy – the draft should be just like that. If you always use some specific words in all the places, you should think about an alternative words which can replace them. The text should be interesting to read so there is no need to repeat that one word everywhere. You should avoid phrases „he/she/they said“ – you can show who is speaking without using too much pronouns. Also you shouldn‘t use difficult phrases which you can say in a simpler way. For example, instead of writing „he went to eat and fell asleep“ you can say „he ate and fell asleep“. Every scene is a part of a story so everything should be said because it‘s necessary, not reckless.

Second step

Look again to your draft – is every scene necessary, does it tell something new to the reader? If not, you can still change something by removing unnecessary parts or changing them. Every scene should satisfy three terms: why it‘s necessary to the reader, if there‘s something new or if there you can find an answer to the previous question and is it interesting for you. Pay attention to the last one – if you get bored while reading it, everyone else will also feel the same. So you can put more action in that scene or surprise a reader with some unexpected things happen. If it‘s still doesn‘t work then you should think about how can you make it stronger and more impressive.

Third step

The answer to the last sentence is a special technique to fulfill all the aspects of the story and it‘s 5 words: who, what, why, where and when. These are the key questions which every story has to have answers to. Mark incorrect text places and help them improve.

Fourth step

Ask for a feedback to your drafts from the other writing people. It‘s important to know how your work looks through the eyes of another person – he can see more imperfections because it‘s the first time he is reading your text while you have already red it for about

million times. If you feel uncomfortable with the thought that everyone will know „who wrote this nonsense“ you can even be anonymous. It‘s the best way to get an objective opinion.

Fifth step

Your first draft is a full story with all the necessary and unnecessary details involved. When rewriting you should always think about how things you have already said correlates with events in the future. There can be some hints which meaning unrolls later but they keep the readers eye to what‘s happening now. When you can understand what was happening before in the sequence of actions you can clearly see what fits in your whole story and what doesn‘t.

Almost done – sixth step

It‘s time to revise again and rewrite – but before that you should get some rest and do some other things which helps you to relax. And just after some rest you can look to your draft again and you will see how fresh it looks like. You will probably notice some places where you will say „did i wrote it? really?“ and that‘s the point. Read it from the end to start – it‘s more essential for the language and the sentence structure.

Finally – seventh step

It‘s beneficial to rewrite your draft in a new document because it lets you think about each word and the whole view of sentence and paragraph. It‘s a really effective way to note every flaw. Read your drafts aloud – when you do that you accept the information you hear as if it‘s from the other peoples mouth – so it can also help you see your mistakes at a distance. Finally, if you need some more help, you can find a writing trainer or ask some help in writers community online.
